About Daniel R. Harris

Daniel Harris is the founder and principal of D.R. Harris & Co, a fee-only registered investment advisory firm located in the greater San Diego metropolitan area.

Education

Daniel Harris earned a B.A. from Stanford University in 2003.  He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Distinction.  While at Stanford he earned the President’s Award for Academic Excellence given to the top 150 students in the class. 

 

He earned a J.D. from the University of California Berkeley in 2006.  His coursework focused on aspects of tax law, insurance law, estate planning, and other topics.  He was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award for being the top student in Real Estate Transactions and served as an editor on multiple law journals during his time at Berkeley.

Work Experience

In the legal field, Daniel has worked for the United States Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman.  In the financial field he has worked for Merrill Lynch as well as D.R. Harris & Co., where he has been a principal since 2009.

Civic Involvement

Daniel is active in the Greater San Diego community.  He has served as a Past President of the Stanford Club of San Diego.  He is a former President of the Cardinal Young Alumni in San Diego where he helped the organization grow substantially during his tenure.  Additionally, he has served as an officer and community service director for Rotary International where he helped distribute over $100,000 a year in grants to nonprofits within the Greater San Diego community.  

Investment Philosophy

Daniel’s investment approach is influenced by the Nobel prize winning research of Eugene Fama and Robert Shiller.  He is also deeply influenced by four people: Warren Buffet on value orientation and patience, Phillip Fisher on components of sustainability in exceptional high quality companies, David Swensen on multi-asset class investing and decision making and John Bogle on minimization of costs and stewardship of client money.

Daniel is married with three children.  He is an avid hiker, world traveler, nature lover and devoted foodie especially loving a great and adventurous home cooked meal.  He has a soft spot for the amazing bulgogi and barbecue from Zion Market and anything home cooked from Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”.  He lives and works in the UTC area of San Diego just down the street from UC San Diego.
